MesaCounty is located along Colorados west central border.It forms part of the Grand Junction, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area and as of the 2000 census had a population of 116,255.Grand Junction is the largest city in MesaCounty and serves as its county seat.
Mesa gets its name from the Spanish word for table, for all the flat-topped mountains in the area.MesaCounty was one of many towns founded around the 1880s to serve gold and silver prospectors and their families. This county began to thrive around 1887 when the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad started service in this area.Soon after, irrigation transformed this once desert plain into a fertile and productive agricultural area.Nowadays, MesaCountys economy is driven by light agricultural (mainly fruit), manufacturing and service industries.Mesa sure enough has changed throughout the years and always for the better.
